The project brings an indoor sports arena and swimming complex together within a single public facility, while establishing strong connections with the surrounding parks and recreational landscape. Rather than addressing Stadium Avenue as a conventional frontal entrance, the building is set back to create a generous approach zone where pedestrian, bicycle, vehicular, and athlete circulation are clearly separated and directed towards the complex.
A central fissure divides the two principal volumes while simultaneously becoming their shared spatial and circulation spine. Open and semi-open spaces, social programmes, and entrances to both the sports hall and swimming pool are organised around this void, which extends towards the adjacent Millet Garden and establishes a direct visual and physical connection between the new complex and the site’s former identity as a stadium.
The primary structure is conceived in glulam, reducing the reliance on more carbon-intensive structural systems while giving the large-span interiors a distinct material character. Spectator circulation is integrated within the timber structure, while athlete and staff routes remain independently organised. The result is a sports complex where structure, circulation, and landscape work together to transform two large programme volumes into a connected public environment.
